Photoshop Level 1 Extras

The following examples include files that may be as large as 2MB in size and could take a while to download over a slow internet connection!

Resolution Example
These two files represent a difference in resolution. This file was prepared for the web and contains fewer pixels than this picture. To see the exact sizes choose Image->Image Size from the Photoshop menu with one of the pictures selected. Repeat for the second picture. To see how resolution affects quality, zoom in on the pictures and you will see the first picture does not have as much detail as the second.

Unsharp Mask Example
To see how the Unsharp Mask filter affects a picture, download this file and open it in Photoshop. Once you have opened the picture then choose Filters->Sharpen->Unsharp Mask. Set the Amount to 100%, Radius to 1 pixel, Threshold to 0, and make sure the Preview box is checked. You should be able to see more detail appear on the fur of the cat in the picture. This filter is useful for sharpening slightly blurry pictures.

Red Eye Removal
Two files are provided to practice removing red eye from. In one picture the eye is very large and in the second the eyes are quite small. To start, download the previous two files and then follow the procedure below on each.

1. Open the file that you want to remove red eye from.

2. Use the elliptical marquee, the quick mask mode, or any other method to select red area of eye. Be careful to get all of the red eye, but do not select the eyelid.

3. Choose the sponge tool and make sure that it is set to Desaturate. Set the brush size so that it is a soft circle that is about the same size as the selection that you have made.

4. Use the sponge tool to Desaturate all of the area inside the selection until it becomes dark enough to look like a pupil.

5. If a red halo persists around the pupil, then create a new larger selection around the pupil, and run the sponge over the effected area a small amount to remove the red.

Creating a Page with Four 4x5 Pictures on it
For this example, four sample pictures are provided. Download them from this directory. After the pictures have been downloaded follow the procedure below.

1. Open each picture in turn and choose Image->Image Size. Set the Width so that it is represented in Inches and type 5 in the box. Next type 500 in the resolution box. Press ok and the image is resized. (Note that the dimensions and resolution will vary if you are using different pictures, DO NOT LET THE FILE SIZE INCREASE, decrease the resolution until it does not). Save the picture.

2. Create a new picture with the following dimensions:
    Width: 10.5 Inches
    Height: 8.2 Inches
    Resolution: 500 DPI
(These numbers can vary depending on the size that your printer can print and the resolution you used earlier).

3. Now copy the first picture to the new file that you have created and drag it to the upper left corner.

4. Open the second picture and drag it to the upper right corner and then copy and move the third and fourth pictures to the bottom left and bottom right respectively.

5. You should now have a file that contains five layers (one for each picture and the background). Once you make sure that no pictures are overlapping choose Layer->Flatten Image and all of the layers will be merged into a single layer. You are now ready to print the picture.
